High-performance horses are subject to enormous physical stress in active sport.
The lungs are particularly challenged during activity: In order to maintain the performance of the muscles, sufficient oxygen must be provided in a short time. For this reason, significantly more blood flows through the pulmonary capillary system at high speed than with moderate or light exercise. This changes the pressure conditions in the pulmonary capillaries/aveoli and stress-related disorders of the blood-gas barrier can occur: blood leaks into the capillary system.
The entire gas exchange is disturbed and less oxygen can be provided to the muscles. The result is a noticeable drop in performance , which often determines victory or defeat in sport in the last few meters.
Many riders and trainers of high-performance horses are not aware that these performance losses are not due to a poor level of training and incorrect energy supply but to an impairment of gas exchange in the lungs.
Almost all horses in high-performance sport experience a rupture of the sensitive capillaries. Only in a small percentage is this also shown by bleeding from the nostrils that is visible to the outside. This variant mainly affects racing horses, which is why exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) is erroneously associated only with racing although it can affect high-performance horses of all breeds and sports .
